Never too far.....

Here lately with mommy-ing, wife-ing, school, and volunteer events, I just haven't had the time to write. So you guys are really behind on my whole weight-loss journey. Well for about a 1 1/2 weeks it was more of a weigh-more journey. I kinda hit a bump in the road where I refused to eat the things that I know are good for me and indulged, and over-indulged in the those foods that stick to my mid-section, back, and hips. Nevertheless, I regrouped and I am once again back on track. Well on my journey, I picked up a new exercise activity to add to my very short list of enjoyable activities where ACTIVE actually takes place. For example I consider scrapbooking, reading, writing, and listening to music to be enjoyable activities but they really aren't that active. So anyway, I picked up bike riding. A couple of weeks ago I went to the local Goodwill and purchased a great bike for $20 that I later saw in the store for $195. My son and I did a little repair work and I was ready to hit the road. On my first bike ride in about 15 years I was feeling great. I hit the bike trail armed with ipod, water bottle, helmet, and cell phone (for emergencies). I was just a ridin' and humming along, enjoying the beautiful scene. The bike trail meanders through the woods and across a lake. About 17 min. and 32 sec. into the ride something in my head said, "Don't ride too far. You still have to get back home." So I turned around and began home, and you guessed it, 3 min. later I was so tired from pedaling that I felt like I would fall out! I ended up sitting down on the grass and calling my teenage son to come get me. He told my daughter, who then called my father. Now everyone had something to laugh at. The thought of me sitting on the side of the street, bike thrown in the grass, and helmet tossed away was more than my father could contain. I think he's still laughing. He even hopped in his truck trying to make it to the park before my son could get there just so he could get a real visual image. Well I haven't given up on bike riding yet, but I also haven't hit that trail again. For right now I think I will just build up my endurance riding in the cul-de-sac down the street, that way I'm never too far from home.

And I have dropped another 3lbs. Thats a total of 10lbs over the past 5 weeks.

  2. That cracks me up, and sounds like me!! I won't get a bike, just because you always need to ride home! Congrats on your weight loss!

  3. I know how you feel - I've done that where it feels so good to get out on the bike, it's easy to over-do it and burn out. BTW, I also love how you use "wife-ing" and "mommy-ing" as verbs - I might steal that!

  5. The last time I rode a bike was years ago and I could barely make it down the block without giving up, so you definitely did better than me! Congrats on the 10 lbs, you're inspiring me to work harder.

    p.s. following you from MBC!

  7. You can do it. I, on the other hand, have been on a yo-you ride. I lose some weight and then I lose control and gain some weight. Back and forth, I know it's not good. Blah...

  8. Funny. I just thought about you today and wondering whta you were up to. I too am starting the Big Diet today....I am getting hungry and crabby just typing this. But my boys are heading out of town for 5 days so this is the perfect opportunity to eat what I need to and get that first tough week out of the way. 10 pounds! Awesome! You go girl! You are my inspiration!
p.s don't worry about the bike thing. I would love to bike, but I think my caboose is too big to even SIT on a bike seat. Are their bikes available with tractor seats? :)

  11. Good for you! Thank God for cell phones, huh? That bike trail sounds like a nice place to ride though, you should definitely try it again but just go for 10 minutes before turning around. Each week you could GRADUALLY increase your distance and you would be encouraged to see improvement, I'm sure! Congratulations on dropping 10 lbs.! Keep up the good work!

    Congrats on your SITS day!

  12. Good for you for trying something new! I've been wanting to get into some bike riding, but the cost of a new bike has totally put me off. I hadn't even thought to check Goodwill! I hope you ride again soon, just try to pace yourself next time! :)

  18. I'm on a quest to lose weight through biking as well. We found a great deal on a stationary bike on Craigslist and I love it.

Now if my 2 year old would only start napping again....ugh! 6 kids...any tips on getting him to nap again, or at least have quiet time?

Any of your wisdom on this subject would be greatly appreciated!!

E-mail me at marilee[at]reallyworkingfromhome.com whenever you get a chance!!

  23. Good for you! We did this only with hiking and guess what? There is no one to call when you hike 2 hours in one direction and must go back the same way. Needless to say, I needed TWO Sonic Lemon Berry Slushes to rejuvinate me.

  24. I think learning our limits is definitely a skill. I always forget to leave enough energy to get back too. Oops.

    Happy SITS day!

  29. That's funny! I rode a bike (after not having done so in a long time) a few years ago and was surprised at how sore I was after.

  30. I haven't been on a bike in years and I used to love it :( The one thing I didn't like was the sore butt you got from the seat!

  34. Bicycling is a great form of exercise and is easier on the joints than running for instance. That post was about 6 months ago, are you still riding I hope?

  35. How are you doing now? Ihave been working out for almost a month. Since dec. 5 I have lost 21 lbs. 10 in 5 weeks is great. Reason i dropped so fast is I took all sugar and carbs out of my diet.
